Question: Is it possible to survive off of a nursing salary in the florida keys? (Posted by: stephanie g on 2011-08-03 13:17:18) My boyfriend and I are thinking about moving to the Keys after I graduate. We have no idea what he would do for work down there, so we would most likely be living off of my income at first. I will have my A.S. and be an RN. I know cost of living is ridiculous down there, and salary.com didn't really give me a clear idea as to what nurses, who are just starting out, are making. In fact, when I checked salary.com for the area I live in currently, the salaries for this area were EXTREMELY different (higher) than what my school has told the students we can expect to make starting out. Any info is greatly appreciated!!! |

I am about 35 min from Tampa , as of cost of living it is higher then say like Michigan but it has went down alot . Dont worry if your a Rn you will make good money in Florida .... I dont know much on Florida Keys though but all same ur a Rn u will do good ...Again I live by Tampa so I am going by here |

Posted by: webhead28 on 2011-08-03, 15:39:41 Don't do it!!! You will not make much money as an RN in the Florida Keys. In fact, you will make far less there than you could the next county up, in Miami. This wouldn't make much sense for you financially because everything in the Keys is VERY expensive. A new grad RN in south Florida with no experience will probably start out in the very low $20s per hour. After the taxes are taken out, and you figure in the higher cost of housing and everything else in the Keys, you may very well find yourself broke all the time. The type of work your boyfriend might be able to get is likely to be something in the service industry (waiter, bartender, retail clerk, etc.) because tourism is pretty much the only thing going on in the Keys. And those kinds of jobs are not easy to get there right now either. If you want to be near the sun and the ocean you can still have both AND make better money in one of the metro areas elsewhere in Florida (Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, etc.) |

Posted by: JoJo on 2011-08-03, 18:25:43 No. The wages for RNs in the Florida Keys won't support you with the very high cost of living there. You will be a new grad and will have a very, very difficult time finding a job there. The hospitals are small the the local college produces all the new RNs they use. The others leave the Keys to get experience and then come back to a higher wage. |
