Question: Can i get a refund on washington state sales tax if i am an oregon resident? (Posted by: on 2011-12-07 18:39:12) I bought a car in Washington and paid sales tax on it without knowing about the Oregon exemption to it. I am in the military and I was wondering what I need to do to get a refund on the tax I paid or if I can get a refund at all. |

Posted by: SumDude on 2011-12-07, 20:21:44 If you are stationed in Washington, you have to pay the full sales tax (unless there is a break for military people). We charge a "use tax " which is the same rate as the sales tax when people register cars in Washington they bought in Oregon; or else everyone would rush to Oregon to buy their cars. A serviceman who buys his car in his home state then gets stationed here does not have to re-licence his car [and so avoids the use tax fee] - so that would have been the way to go (maybe). WA raises money through sales tax (no income tax) whereas Oregon has an income tax, but no sales tax. |
